Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Customer Service Center is a 177,000SF building utilizing state-of-the-art energy conservation techniques. Energy conservation techniques included 30 degree delta T chilled water system, raised floor supply air system for the office areas, direct/indirect evaporative cooling and slab radiant heating.
Since the opening of the building, employee absenteeism was reduced by 25 %. The central plant was retro-commissioned. The project has been certified LEED Platinum.
The lighting system utilized direct/indirect luminaires with integral daylighting controls which sample available ambient light and initiate the dimming of the luminaires in daylit areas. The energy efficient design was recognized by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and given the EPRI Energy Award for excellence in establishing energy goals, research of control schemes and successful application of energy saving schemes.
The Light Power Density (LPD) that was designed and installed in the mid 1990’s still exceeds the expectations of what is required in Title 24 compliance today.
